How Are You "Creating" Today?

Every day you and I will ask people “How are you doing today?”

And we will get all sorts of responses.

“Oh, I’m doin” “I’m fair to middling”. “I’m taking what they’re giving”

“I could be better”

Or some people just mumble about how bad the world is…

It kind of reminds me of Norm Peterson in the great Cheers tv show. One day, he comes in and everyone shouts “NORM!!!”… Woody the bartender says “How’s the world treating you Mr. Peterson?” … to which Norm replies “Like the world’s a dog and I’m wearing mild bone underwear!”

I want you to consider something. A lot of answers you will get to this question of “how are you doing?” will be based on how the person perceives the world to be treating them. And a lot of us feel like our day is dependent on what is going on around us. From the OUTSIDE.

Stocks are up, the world is great. Stocks are down, the world is terrible. You can insert anything in the place of stocks. Kids, Marriage, News, Co-workers. So many of us base how we are doing on what is happening to us.

But I would like you to consider a different viewpoint. One that may just challenge you.

What if…

You could…

CREATE HOW YOUR DAY IS GOING?

What if YOU wake up with the determination to be the creator of how your day will go. And YOU were determined not to let outside things affect how your day went.

No matter how circumstances or people around you treated you, you made the decision to CREATE YOUR DAY. You make the decision that today would be a phenomenal day from the moment you woke up until you laid your head on the pillow at night.

How do you think your day would go if you did that?

How do you think you’d answer when someone asked you “how are you doing today?”

If you made the decision that the day was going to be great you’d have no choice but to answer “I’m having a great day!”… because you had decided ahead of time to have a great day.

It is that easy.

Make the decision tonight that when you wake up you will CREATE a great day for yourself tomorrow.

And when the guy cuts you off on the road you don’t immediately go to pieces and start cursing at him. Or when your kids do something you don’t like you don’t go off on them. No matter what happens you just go with the flow. Because you decided to create a great day today.

You Are Just Like An Iceberg

Picture if you will, you are able to travel back in time to the year 1912. And the great ship the Titanic has just set sail for North America. Since you are a student of history, you know that the Titanic is going to sink. 


So you decide to do something about it. 


You get to the iceberg days before that fateful night when the big ship slammed into the huge iceberg. And here is what you do…


You decide to start chiseling away at the part of the iceberg that is sticking out of the water. And you and your crew work and work and work. Tirelessly. Day and night you keep chipping away at the tip of the iceberg until it is no longer visible above the surface. 


You did it. And you and your crew sit back and enjoy a cold beverage and marvel at the good work you did. You can’t see the iceberg anymore.


A job well done!


On April 14, the Titanic comes through. And it slams into the huge iceberg still beneath the surface, sinking. 


All because YOU didn’t fix the REAL problem. The problem wasn’t what you could see. The problem was what was below the surface. You only treated the symptom and you did NOTHING to address the problem itself.


What does this have to do with your health?


It happens all of the time. 


Let’s say you have a symptom. A headache. And it sucks to have a headache. I know personally about that. But…that headache is just like the tip of the iceberg. It is ONLY a symptom of an underlying problem in your body.


One such problem, and it happens quite often, is an imbalance somewhere in your nervous system. This imbalance often leads to damage in the body that show no symptoms initially. Once it gets bad enough, once the “iceberg” gets big enough, symptoms can show up as the end result of this process.

How Free Are You?

Last week we celebrated Independence Day as a nation. Fireworks, fun, and hotdog eating contests (I still can’t imagine how that guy ate 70+ hotdogs!). It was the one day of the year that we as a country celebrate when we declared our independence from an oppressive regime.


And it got me thinking about you and your health.

How I Could Have Enjoyed My Vacation More

Last week I took some time off with my family to go down to Florida. We hadn’t been away together for almost a year, and it was time to get out of town.

And while I was gone, something very interesting happened. I started getting a headache every afternoon. It got so annoying that on a couple days, I actually took some Motrin. And I hate taking medicine.

By Friday, I had had enough. I decided to go see my friend Dr. Brian Moriarty at Loving Chiropractic of Stuart. And I got an adjustment. And guess what happened? No. More. Headache. It changed the rest of my vacation. Chiropractic works. All the time.

I spent the majority of my vacation not enjoying it as much as I could have. And I shouldn’t have had to put up with it.

And it got me thinking. About you.

Time to Rest and Recharge

I am on vacation in Florida this week with my family. We found a place we love on the Atlantic coast. The weather has been pretty overcast all week, but it’s great to take time with my family.

And it got me thinking…

It is so very important to take time to rest and recharge. For your mental, spiritual and physical health. 

And you don’t have to get out of town to do that. You can just take a drive to the mountains. 

Unplug. 

No phone. No Facebook. No emails.

If you think about it, putting your phone in Airplane mode is like taking a vacation nowadays. Think of it as “taking a vacation….from other people’s problems”!!!

Another great way you can get away without going on vacation is to get quiet and meditate. I know, “meditation” is a word that sometimes gets a bad rap.By meditation, I just mean to close your eyes and quiet your mind. That right there is a way to get away every single day.

So my plan after we get back is to commit to getting quiet every single day. To see what I want to happen that day.

This past Sunday was St. Patrick’s Day. Growing up Irish, it was always a huge day in our house. It was always my dad’s #1 favorite day of the year. So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day…

This blog is about luck.

In the sports world, whenever a team gets a lucky break, you’ll often hear the announcer repeat the old adage - “I’d rather be lucky than good!” And while this may sometimes be true in the sports world, it’s completely the opposite when it comes to your health. If you are one of those people who rely on luck for your future health, you are asking for trouble.

Leaving anything up to luck is a recipe for disaster. A sports team, a business, and yes, a human body. Management by luck and hoping for the best rarely works out well for anyone. Except maybe for the person from Simpsonville who won $1.5 Billion. But even for them, if they don’t have a plan for their money or for their life, they’ll also be in trouble. No question.

So what about you?

What are you relying on for your health?


Hope? Luck?


Or a strategy?


The smartest people, and the healthiest people, have a strategy they employ to grow their health- month after month, year after year. And this strategy usually encompasses MANY different aspects of health.


Diet, exercise, meditation/relaxation/visualization, rest, chiropractic.


So here’s my suggestion to you…do these 3 things and you will no longer be leaving your health up to luck.

  1. Develop a vision and a goal for where you want your health to be in 5-10-20-40 years.

  2. List the areas of life you need to improve upon and make a list of 3-5 action steps for each area. 3-5 things that if you do them, they will improve your health.

  3. Every day, focus on keeping yourself on track and take baby steps. Don’t get frustrated if you have an “off day”. Just get back up the next day and get back on track.


Now you may have noticed that I mentioned Chiropractic as a strategy to improve ones health. “I thought chiropractic was for bad backs?” But many people use chiropractic to positively impact their overall health. In fact, it’s as important as eating right or exercising in getting healthier. If it’s not part of your lifestyle, you should consider it.

How's Your Passion For Life?

A few weeks ago while I was at dinner with my family, I overheard a group of businessmen talking. And they were lamenting the fact that it seemed like every week was the same. They were complaining that life was like the movie “Groundhog Day” and than every day felt like the same thing over and over. Not just at work, but it felt like the same thing at home with their families. Get up, get ready, get the kids to school, go to work, repeat.

Maybe you feel the same way. I know that I go though times in my life when I feel that way.

And that what this blog post is about. Passion. When things feel like the same thing over and over, it means that maybe you have lost passion. I’m not talking about the romanticized passion. But passion for life.

We are all facing challenges we have never faced before. The media has poisoned even the most optimistic views of what is possible in life. If you want your 2019 to be a great year, then you had better break out of the fog and crank up your enthusiasm for you life and your family.

The first step in this is to give yourself an “attitude adjustment” and get your mojo back. A big part of that is to shake your routine up. A mentor of mine, Dr. Shawn Dill, said in a recent podcast that “routine is the killer of creativity”. So start doing things differently.

Get up earlier. Read a book for 10 minutes. Exercise. Drink more water. Do a daily gratitude journal. Get off of social media. Take a different route to work today. Get outside in nature and get in the sun. Pay close attention to your inner self-talk - this has a huge impact on you.

Full transparency here…I am talking to myself as much as I am talking to you. So I’m committing to this as well.

Please remember, YOU have the power to write your own life’s script. Take responsibility for your thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. Choose to be proactive in life and not just let life happen to you. Get out there and make changes so that you begin to live with passion again. Take charge of what goes into your brain every single day.

Invest some time in improving yourself in 2019. And this will be the best year of your life. It starts TODAY!

Systems Never Get Tired

Last Sunday was Super Bowl Sunday. And the Patriots won. I’m honestly neither happy nor sad about them winning. But I find it interesting. I once heard a quote that someone attributed to the Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick.

That quote was:

“People get tired. Systems don’t.”

Honestly I don’t even know if he said this. But it directly applies to the Patriots dynasty. They have a system that works year in and year out. Regardless of the players involved. OK, there is a guy named Tom Brady who is pretty good. But he’s the ONLY constant throughout their dynasty. But the Patriot system works every year.

And it got me thinking about you and your health.

Do you have a system for getting and staying healthier?

Something that will work year in and year out, regardless of what is going on with you personally. A system.

Not leaving your health to chance.

If you could be like Coach Belichick. Have a GOAL. His is the Super Bowl Championship. What would you say your health goal is? Perfect immunity? Lower weight? A longer life? To grow old and be in great shape?

So pick your health goal.

Then Belichick has a PLAN. A step-by-step process that outlines how he will achieve his goal.

So make your health plan.

Then, Coach Belichick EXECUTES his plan without fail. He has the ability to easily see if his plan is working or if it needs tweaking. As the wins pile up he then knows that he is on the right track.

It is up to you to execute your plan to get and stay healthier. And make minor corrections if necessary.

One essential thing that MUST be part of your health plan is regular chiropractic care. You can do everything else perfectly, but chiropractic is like the quarterback of your football team. Chiropractic Helps You Breathe Better

The spine coexists intimately with the central nervous system by way of tiny neurons scattered throughout small muscles, ligaments, discs, and joints in and around each spinal segment. Normal motion within each vertebra allows proper communication between the spine and brain. The central nervous system controls all autonomic functions. A great night of sleep becomes easier to achieve as sleep hormones become more balanced within the body. The autonomic nervous system controls vital involuntary functions like heartbeat, blood pressure, and breathing. Imbalances in the autonomic nervous system cause the majority of sleep deprivation issues. 

Many unifying factors lead to a more balanced autonomic nervous system. A combination of eating well, moving the body, reducing emotional stress, and deep breathing all improve the sleep inducing environment. One major factor that contributes to sleeplessness often goes unaddressed or remains unknown to those who badly want to experience a quality sleep rhythm. Posture, bio-mechanical structure, and movement of the spine play a vital role in regulating hormone balance and fixing the problem that no drug or pill can resolve. The spine experiences an intimate connection to the autonomic nervous system through microscopic neurons and receptors densely populated in the small muscles, ligaments, and joints in and around the spine. These neurons communicate with the brain on a second-by-second basis for an entire lifetime. Altered autonomic nervous system balance results from abnormal movement or misalignment in a person’s spine and posture. Quantity Counts

One day at the gym wonít turn you into Arnold Schwarzenegger and a single, low carb meal won't make you skinny.  Exercise and proper nutrition can get you healthy, but they need to be repeated regularly to see real change.  Likewise, desired Chiropractic results come from time, repetition and a sustained clear nerve system.  Don't expect one session to get the job done.

Healing On A Spare Tire

In case you get a flat, the temporary donut in your trunk is meant to get you off the road and to the nearest service station for proper repair ASAP. Manufacturer’s instructions warn you to take it slow and easy when driving on them - those tiny tires aren’t designed to withstand the load of normal driving. But regardless of that warning, you’ve probably seen some idiot speeding down the highway on one, oblivious to the potential risks. 

Some people treat their health that way. When they get an injury or a health problem they mask their symptoms with “spare tire” medication, all the while continuing the activities that got them there in the first place. They pay little attention to the risks of temporarily patching their problem with drugs and pass on fixing the CAUSE of their problem. That can get you into trouble. 

When it comes to acute or chronic health problems, the best policy is to fix the underlying cause of the problem the right way instead of masking the symptoms with medication. That’s the core philosophy of drugless Chiropractic care. In the short term drugs may bring you false comfort, but in the long run you’re risking a serious blow out.

Roller Coaster Chiropractic

It's not uncommon to see clients who get great results from chiropractic stop their care once they feel good, only to return with their original problem or something worse.  Many repeat this cycle over and over again - traveling up and down the feel good, feel bad roller coaster of temporary relief, without truly getting healthy.

Chiropractic used correctly goes beyond the wavering cycles of symptomatic care, to pursuing the higher standard of optimal function.  Whether you feel good or bad, a body that exists in a sustained subluxated state is less likely to repair itself when injured or perform to it's best when under demand.  If, however your body is allowed to reach its full potential with regular adjustments and a perpetually clear Nerve System, the sky's the limit to what you can achieve.
